Forty years ago the “événements de mai” exploded in France seeming, at least to this American’s eyes, to kick the French out of the old world and into the new. The mass student and workers’ rebellion seemed to start a relaxing of social strictures that is continuing to this day. Quand on lit le reportage de Susan sur Paris -d’une observation aussi fine que cruelle – il est tentant de céder à la nostalgie…. Et c’est ce que font aussi les Français. Précisément parce que tout a beaucoup changé, et eux avec, ils se retournent sur leur dernière rencontre avec l’histoire: mai 68! Est-ce que de l’extérieur on comprend cette polarisation pour ou contre mai 68 ? C’est sans doute bizarre. En tout cas, les émissions de radio, de télévision, les expositions, les débats sur 68 foisonnent. Les affiches de 68 se vendent très bien aux enchères à l’hôtel Drouot : ironique retour des choses!.
