May 1 = Journée de Travail = Labor Day equivalent in France

Ghislaine Robert sent us this photo of France’s equivalent of Labor Day, last May 1. We don’t know who were in the symbolic teddy bear costumes but we hope their goal was to protect the French “Gilets jaunes” protesters and the French people in general. Also, perhaps, to round the edges of anger and frustration that most French people are feeling these days.

Ghislaine explains: “Les nounours, du côté des policiers ? non, je ne le pense pas, trop d’affaires, et de suspicion. Les nounours spectateurs, pourquoi pas? Les nounours, symbole d’apaisement, de “douceur”, et plus largement de dialogue, de compréhension, de réconciliation entre la police et les manifestants, de non-violence sûrement. Compliqué ce mouvement, mais les nounours sont un joli clin d’œil et une métaphore de pacification des manifs.”
